1972

State Formation and the 1972 Constitution

Independent Bangladesh builds a parliamentary republic out of war, displacement, and constitutional ambition.

In 1972, Bangladesh moved from wartime victory to the difficult work of state formation. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman returned in January to lead the new government, the Constituent Assembly began work in April, and the Constitution of the People's Republic of Bangladesh was adopted on 4 November before taking effect on 16 December. The year linked liberation to institution-building through parliamentary government, fundamental rights, and the four state principles of nationalism, socialism, democracy, and secularism.

Famine, Emergency, and State Crisis

Scarcity, coercion, and the narrowing of democratic space in early independent Bangladesh.

In 1974, Bangladesh faced one of the most severe crises of its early independence period. Floods, food-market failures, wartime economic damage, inflation, and weak administration converged into the famine remembered as the famine of '74, with rural Bangladesh suffering the worst effects. The same year also saw the Special Powers Act and a broader tightening of state power, showing how post-liberation hopes were giving way to fear, scarcity, and coercive governance.

15 August Assassination of Sheikh Mujib

The killings at Dhanmondi 32 abruptly ended Bangladesh's founding leadership phase.

On 15 August 1975, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family were killed in a military-backed coup in Dhaka. The event marked a foundational rupture in post-independence politics and opened a prolonged period of military and quasi-military dominance.

In 1975, Bangladesh entered a decisive turning point: the transition toward BAKSAL, escalating political centralization, the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 15 August, and the jail killings of 3 November. These events reshaped the state, party politics, and military-civil relations for decades.

On 7 November 1975, amid coups and counter-coups after the August and jail killings, sections of soldiers and political activists mobilized in Dhaka. The upheaval helped bring Ziaur Rahman to the center of state power, while its meaning remains sharply contested in Bangladesh's political memory.

Farakka Long March

On 16 May 1976, Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani led a mass long march from Rajshahi toward the Farakka frontier to protest upstream diversion of Ganges water and to demand Bangladesh's fair river-water rights. The march linked ecological anxiety in the Padma basin with post-independence mass politics.

Shanti Bahini Insurgency in the Chittagong Hill Tracts

Armed conflict, displacement, and a negotiated end through the 1997 accord.

From early 1976 onward, armed conflict in the Chittagong Hill Tracts intensified between state forces and the PCJSS's armed wing, Shanti Bahini, around autonomy, land, and political recognition demands. The conflict caused long-term insecurity and displacement before a formal peace accord was signed on 2 December 1997.

1981

Assassination of Ziaur Rahman

The killing of Bangladesh’s president in Chittagong reopens military-political instability.

President Ziaur Rahman was killed in Chittagong on 30 May 1981 during a military revolt. The immediate aftermath included a contested search for responsibility, the death of Major General M. A. Manzur, and a civilian succession under Abdus Sattar before Ershad’s 1982 coup.

Ershad's Coup and the Return of Military Rule

The elected post-1975 order gives way to another military-backed regime.

On 24 March 1982, Army Chief Hussain Muhammad Ershad seized power, removed President Abdus Sattar's elected government, suspended parts of the constitution, and imposed martial law. The coup ended a fragile civilian experiment that had followed the turbulence of the late 1970s and reinserted the military directly into the core of Bangladesh's political order. What followed was not only a change of ruler but the beginning of a new authoritarian phase that reshaped institutions, party politics, and the language of democratic resistance.

1990

Mass Uprising

The democratic uprising that ended the Ershad regime.

The 1990 Mass Uprising was the culmination of years of resistance to military-backed authoritarian rule in Bangladesh. Student activism, the martyrdom of Nur Hossain in 1987, opposition-alliance coordination, and professional-civic mobilization converged in a final wave of pressure that forced Hussain Muhammad Ershad to resign and opened the path to the Shahabuddin-led transition and the 1991 restoration of parliamentary democracy.

1996

Thirteenth Amendment and Caretaker Government

A constitutional compromise creates a neutral election-time government framework.

In 1996, Bangladesh adopted the Thirteenth Amendment to create a non-party caretaker government for supervising parliamentary elections. The change emerged from a deep opposition boycott, a disputed February election, and escalating demands for a neutral election-time administration, turning electoral credibility into a constitutional question.

2001

Padua/Pyrdiwah-Boraibari Border Clash

April 2001 Bangladesh-India frontier fighting and rapid de-escalation.

In April 2001, armed clashes broke out along sections of the Bangladesh-India border, centered first on the disputed Padua/Pyrdiwah area and then around Boraibari. The fighting between Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) and India's Border Security Force (BSF) caused military casualties on both sides and triggered urgent ceasefire diplomacy.

2002-2003

Operation Clean Heart

A military-led anti-crime drive raises enduring questions about security, impunity, and rights.

Operation Clean Heart was a nationwide anti-crime drive launched in October 2002 with military deployment under a civilian government. Rights groups reported arrests, deaths in custody, and later legal immunity for security personnel, while official accounts framed the drive as a law-and-order operation.

2004 (August 21)

21 August Grenade Attack

A grenade attack targets an Awami League rally in Dhaka.

On 21 August 2004, grenades were thrown at an Awami League rally in Dhaka, killing and injuring many people and nearly killing Sheikh Hasina. The attack became a defining episode of armed political violence in contemporary Bangladesh.

2005 (August 17)

JMB Nationwide Bombings

Coordinated bomb blasts expose militant networks across Bangladesh.

On 17 August 2005, coordinated bomb blasts occurred across Bangladesh and were attributed to Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh. The attacks exposed the national reach of militant networks and reshaped security politics.

2006-2008

Caretaker Crisis and Emergency Rule

Electoral deadlock, emergency governance, and political transition.

Between late 2006 and 2008, Bangladesh passed through a severe caretaker-system crisis marked by disputed electoral arrangements, escalating street conflict, the 11 January emergency, and prolonged non-elected rule before returning to electoral politics.

2007-2008

Emergency-era Caretaker Rule

A military-backed caretaker phase reset electoral politics while constraining democratic space.

After the 11 January 2007 emergency, Bangladesh entered a prolonged caretaker-governed period backed by security institutions. Anti-corruption drives, political detentions, and administrative restructuring took place under a non-elected framework before the December 2008 election restored elected government. The period remains one of the most contested transitions in contemporary Bangladeshi politics.

2009

BDR Mutiny / Pilkhana Massacre

A deadly revolt at Bangladesh Rifles headquarters became one of the darkest crises in post-emergency Bangladesh.

On 25-26 February 2009, a mutiny by Bangladesh Rifles personnel at Pilkhana in Dhaka turned into one of the deadliest internal security crises in Bangladesh's history. Senior army officers seconded to the force were killed, families were trapped inside the headquarters, and the newly elected government faced an immediate test of authority only weeks after the end of emergency-era rule.

2011

Fifteenth Amendment and Caretaker Abolition

A constitutional amendment removes the caretaker-election framework and reshapes electoral legitimacy debates.

Bangladesh’s Fifteenth Amendment in 2011 removed the constitutional caretaker-government arrangement that had structured several national elections after the 1990 transition. The change followed a Supreme Court judgment but became politically contentious as opposition parties argued that elections under party governments lacked neutrality.

2024

Hasina Resignation and Fall of Government

The Long March to Dhaka ends a fifteen-year Awami League government.

On 5 August 2024, after weeks of mass protests and a planned Long March to Dhaka, Sheikh Hasina resigned and left Bangladesh for India. Protesters entered Ganabhaban, and the military announced steps toward forming an interim arrangement.

Yunus Interim Government Formation

An interim administration takes office after the July-August uprising.

On 8 August 2024, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus took oath as chief adviser of an interim government after Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and the dissolution of parliament. The new administration faced demands for justice, institutional reform, and a credible election pathway.
