Mohammad Ali Jauhar

LeaderPerson

Khilafat leader, journalist, and anti-colonial politician

“Khilafat leader and journalist who connected Muslim political mobilization with the Non-Cooperation movement.”

Alongside his brother Shaukat Ali and other leaders, he helped organize the Khilafat movement and linked its campaign to Gandhi’s Non-Cooperation movement against colonial rule.

Mohammad Ali Jauhar was also a major political journalist: he launched the English weekly The Comrade in 1911 and the Urdu newspaper Hamdard in 1913. His public work combined Muslim political mobilization, anti-colonial protest, and debate over education and communal cooperation.

His speeches, newspapers, and imprisonment made him a major voice in early twentieth-century Muslim and anti-colonial politics. He also helped found Jamia Millia Islamia in 1920 and presided over the Indian National Congress in 1923, while his political commitments did not remain uniform across his career.

Shaukat Ali

LeaderPerson

Khilafat leader and anti-colonial organizer

“Ali Brothers leader who connected Khilafat mobilization with Non-Cooperation politics.”

Alongside his brother Mohammad Ali Jauhar and other leaders, he helped initiate and organize the Khilafat movement and connect it to Gandhi’s Non-Cooperation campaign.

The Ali brothers mobilized Indian Muslim opinion in defence of the Ottoman Caliphate after World War I, while also building a wider anti-colonial alliance with Congress leaders. Shaukat Ali’s activism included public campaigning, political organization, and imprisonment by the colonial government.

He helped turn the Khilafat question into a mass political campaign and made Muslim leadership central to the Non-Cooperation moment. His career also shows how that alliance weakened after the movement’s suspension and the abolition of the Ottoman Caliphate.
