Operation Searchlight Crackdown

The Pakistan Army's 25 March operation turned a political crisis into full-scale war.

On the night of 25 March 1971, the Pakistan Army launched Operation Searchlight in East Pakistan to suppress Bengali political mobilization. The operation targeted Dhaka and other urban centers, including students, political activists, and civilian neighborhoods, and became a decisive trigger for the Bangladesh Liberation War.

1975

15 August Assassination of Sheikh Mujib

The killings at Dhanmondi 32 abruptly ended Bangladesh's founding leadership phase.

On 15 August 1975, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family were killed in a military-backed coup in Dhaka. The event marked a foundational rupture in post-independence politics and opened a prolonged period of military and quasi-military dominance.

1997

Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Accord

A formal peace agreement ended two decades of insurgency but left contested implementation questions.

On 2 December 1997, the Government of Bangladesh and PCJSS signed the Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Accord. The accord ended large-scale insurgency under the Shanti Bahini framework, introduced institutional commitments on autonomy and land issues, and began a long implementation process.

Rana Plaza Collapse

The Savar disaster exposed structural failures in Bangladesh's garment supply chain.

On 24 April 2013, Rana Plaza in Savar collapsed, killing over a thousand people and injuring many more. The disaster triggered domestic and international scrutiny of factory safety, labor governance, and global supply-chain accountability.

Shahbag Movement

A youth-led public demand for justice and historical accountability.

In early 2013, mass gatherings at Shahbag in Dhaka called for stronger accountability for war crimes linked to 1971. Students, bloggers, cultural activists, and citizens transformed the square into a sustained protest space, turning memory politics and justice debates into a central national question.

10th Parliamentary Election

A boycotted national election deepened Bangladesh's crisis of electoral legitimacy.

Bangladesh's 10th Parliamentary Election took place on 5 January 2014 after months of conflict over whether polls should be held under a neutral caretaker arrangement. The main opposition alliance boycotted the vote, many seats were left uncontested, and election day was marked by deadly violence, making the result one of the most disputed turning points in post-1990 Bangladeshi politics.

2017

Rohingya Mass Influx into Bangladesh

Violence in Myanmar drove one of the fastest refugee influxes in recent South Asian history.

From late August 2017, large numbers of Rohingya fled Myanmar's Rakhine State into Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh. The influx rapidly became a major humanitarian emergency involving the Bangladesh government, UN agencies, and international aid networks.

In 2018, Bangladesh saw a compressed sequence of youth-led protest, legislative tightening, and electoral confrontation. The Quota Reform Movement and Safe Road Movement showed how students could rapidly organize around fairness, accountability, and everyday governance. The Digital Security Act then sharpened anxiety over speech and state power, while the 11th Parliamentary Election at the end of the year deepened debate over participation, legitimacy, and the future of democratic competition.

Quota Reform Movement

Students turned government job quotas into a major national debate over fairness and merit.

Beginning on 17 February 2018 and peaking in the spring and summer, the Quota Reform Movement brought university students into a large, coordinated campaign over access to public employment. What began as a policy demand about recruitment rules expanded into a wider youth-led mobilization about fairness, opportunity, policing, and the treatment of dissent.

Safe Road Movement

School and college students transformed grief over road deaths into a national demand for transport accountability.

After two students were killed by a speeding bus in Dhaka on 29 July 2018, school and college students took to the streets demanding safer roads, lawful driving, and accountability in the transport sector. Their disciplined visibility, direct traffic monitoring, and nationwide resonance turned the movement into one of the year's most memorable youth-led civic moments.

Digital Security Act Enacted

The new law became a major reference point in debates over speech, journalism, and state power online.

The Digital Security Act was enacted in October 2018 and quickly became central to debate about freedom of expression in Bangladesh. Critics argued that its vague provisions, broad police powers, and speech-related penalties could be used to intimidate journalists, silence dissent, and extend state control over digital space.

11th Parliamentary Election

Held on 30 December 2018, the election produced a landslide result while drawing sustained dispute over pre-election and election-day conditions.

Bangladesh held its 11th parliamentary election on 30 December 2018 for 300 directly elected seats. Official and reference-election datasets recorded a sweeping victory for the Awami League-led alliance, while opposition leaders rejected the outcome and rights reporting documented a restrictive pre-election environment.

2023

Cyber Security Act Replaces DSA

The government replaced the 2018 DSA amid sustained criticism, while debate over free expression persisted.

In 2023, Bangladesh enacted the Cyber Security Act replacing the Digital Security Act 2018. Critics and rights groups debated whether key coercive provisions were meaningfully reduced or largely retained under a new legal label.

2024

Anti-Discrimination Movement

A youth struggle over jobs, fairness, and the future.

The 2024 Anti-Discrimination Movement began around the reinstatement of the government job quota system. Students from universities across the country mobilized to demand merit-based recruitment. The movement quickly spread nationwide and, over time, grew into a broader social and political protest.

13th Parliamentary Election

Bangladesh's Election Commission set the parliamentary election and referendum for 12 February 2026 amid a transition-period political reset.

On 11 December 2025, Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin announced that Bangladesh's 13th National Parliamentary Election and a national referendum would be held on 12 February 2026. International and domestic attention then focused on election management, participation, and confidence in the process.
