Jahangir
Mughal emperor during Bengal reconsolidation
“The Mughal emperor whose reign saw Bengal’s capital move to Dhaka, renamed Jahangirnagar in his honor.”
As Mughal emperor, Jahangir authorized the campaigns that brought more of Bengal under imperial control and gave his name to the new provincial capital, Jahangirnagar (Dhaka).
During his reign, Islam Khan Chishti moved the Mughal capital of Bengal to Dhaka in 1610 and directed campaigns against resistance networks in the Bhati region. The period connected imperial expansion with a new administrative center.
The Dhaka-centered reorganization strengthened Mughal administration in eastern Bengal, while the campaigns of Jahangir’s reign helped complete the transition from contested frontier to provincial governance.
